MISSION & HISTORY

The Chanticleer Children’s Chorus of West Virginia was founded in 1991 by Sarah L. Carr with the philosophy of teaching musical skill and understanding through a choral music experience to the children of North Central West Virginia. The ensembles were designed to provide meaningful ways for children to discover their own creative musicality in an educationally-based, nurturing environment. CCC reinforces the music education which takes place in the public schools and offers additional enrichment opportunities.

Sarah L. Carr, Artistic Director and Founder of the Chanticleer Children’s Chorus, has extensive experience as a performer, conductor, and teacher. She holds degrees in applied voice from West Virginia Wesleyan College, a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Southern Methodist University in Dallas under the tutelage of Lloyd Pfautch and a Master of Sacred Music from the Perkins School of Theology. She holds a Level III certification from the Choral Music Experience Institute under the direction of Doreen Rao.
More history...

Chanticleer Children’s Chorus is made up of 150 children from five counties. Choristers, age 4 through high school, are placed in one of five ensembles: Training Chorus for preschool age children, Preparatory Chorus for beginning level musicianship, Concert Chorus for intermediate level musicianship, and Chamber Chorus for advanced level musicianship. New this year is a Young Mens Chorus to serve the needs of boys whose voices have changed. All ensembles learn methods of good vocal technique and choral singing as well as basic music skills to prepare them to join the next level of musicianship.

Masterpieces of music from all styles and time periods form the foundation for musical learning and serve as the basis for the curriculum of Chanticleer. The young singers are offered the opportunity to work with adult professional musicians in many areas of artistry. They have presented and toured two small operas with members of the Larry Parsons Chorale, appeared with West Virginia Public Radio performers Larry Groce and Carole Carter and with members of the WVU African Percussion and Dance ensembles, and have twice been invited to appear at the Governor’s Summit on Volunteerism. In the spring of 1998, the chorus toured West Virginia. In June 2000, the Chamber Chorus made a successful tour of Scotland singing six concerts, including St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh and in Durham, England. This past year’s Holiday Concert shared the stage with 8 harpists, ages 7-12 from the Cincinnati Strings Academy Harp Ensemble.

The personal and musical challenges presented to the choristers help in developing their musical sensitivity, poise, self-confidence, perseverance and a loving understanding of art.
